Before you can train your Pit Bull you need to build a relationship with them.
Relationships are built on many individual components. The most important components in any healthy relationship tend to be:
1. Respect.
2. Fairness.
3. Forgiveness.
4. Trust.
5. Love.
Respecting your Pit Bull as an animal and understanding they will not always be perfect is the first step to building a long term relationship with your canine.
Understanding they will make mistakes and learning to forgive them for those mistakes is another critical step.
Fairness should be applied during all parts of your life with your dog. Fairness during play, enforcing rules, and working on obedience with him or her.
A big mistake I see people make is treating one dog better than the other. I have a hard time with this myself in regards to my three dogs and I tend to do more things with my first dog than the other two.
However, I catch myself acting in this manner and quickly find a solution to the problem by including the other two or spending equal amounts of time with them as well.
We have to treat them fairly in order to earn their trust.
Trust is a huge component to a healthy relationship and without it the ties that bind are made from easily breakable string rather than a strong steel cable.
Trust can literally make or break a relationship between you and your dog. Establishing trust will help you and your Pit Bull(s) learn to work with one another like never before.
Love. Love is over rated in the canine world and a lot of the problems dogs are showing is a direct result of too much love.
Yes, you can love a dog too much just as you can love a person who uses you too much as well.
They learn to milk you for all you have and you allow it because you say, "But I looove them soooo much!"
Meanwhile back at the ranch your dog(s) are learning they can get whatever they want when they push your love button.
Attention and affection are necessary but only when the time is right. The time is right after the dog has worked all day and is ready for bed or is at rest after working all day.
