Kennel crackdown targets 'puppy mill' reputation

 HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania's dog kennel operators would face a raft of stricter regulations and new costs of up to $20,000 for the largest kennels under plans revealed Wednesday by the Rendell administration at the first meeting of a reconstituted Dog Law Advisory Board. The board, which hadn't met since Gov. Ed Rendell fired its former members in May, has a daunting task: overseeing a major rewriting of regulations for the state's Dog Law, which guides operations at nearly 2,600 licensed kennels statewide. Those regulations dictate everything from the size of kennel cages to the treatment of their inhabitants. And the proposals could require operators to buy cages twice as large as those allowed under the existing regulations, hire more workers and rebuild facilities, costing each kennel $5,000 to $20,000, officials estimated.  [Read the Rest of this Story]
